Registering a death
After someone dies, their doctor (GP or hospital) will normally be able to start the official paperwork.
They will send a form to the Medical Examiner team, who will be in contact with a member of the family, an executor or
'Next of Kin' to make sure if you have any questions or concerns, and to guide you through the next steps.
If there are no concerns, they will arrange for a form to be sent to the Registrar's Office in the local area to where the person died. You are usually asked to formally register a death within five days of that form being received by the Registrar.
In Warrington, for example, once the form has been received by them, the Registrar will contact you and invite you to make an appointment.
The Registrar you will be in contact with, will depend on the area where the person passed away.
For example, if someone lived in Warrington but passed away in a hospital in Manchester, you will be put in contact with
the Manchester Registrar.
